Modern Coffee has three locations Downtown. The 13th Street cafe can be found at the bottom of the historic Tribune Tower and has been there since…forever? I’m unsure about forever, but I know it’s been there since 2016. This cafe holds a warm place in my heart. A colleague took me here for a coffee the morning I started at my first big-boy job. I had just flown into Oakland and Modern on 13th greeted me with open arms. I’ve been a regular ever since.
Modern is simple. They’ve got hot Counter Culture coffee, velvety caps, a few drinks embellished with house-made flair, and a few chairs – but that’s about it. Think of them as your ‘ole reliable cafe rather than the fancy schmancy cup. Also, Modern is likely the best bang for your buck for a cup of joe Downtown – $3.50 for a large filter brew. I’ll take two.
